The winter forecast for the WonderKids Afterschool program is Warm and Cozy!

Afterschool activities will explore fire, metabolic heat, and all the things that warm our hearts, from laughter to music. Activities will support classroom academics through creative projects and outdoor games. From the end of the school day until 5:00 PM, children have time for free-play, exercise, creative expression, and relaxing before heading home for the evening. Kids should come prepared to go outdoors every day, and friends and families are invited to our Fire and Ice Festival in the last week of the Winter Session before February break. Registration opens November 27 at https://ruralartsvt.org/afterschool.

Daily themes will build on classroom academic topics like weather and climate, animal movement in the winter, winter ecosystems and food chains, handwriting, reading, and include art and literature from creative BIPOC leaders.

Staying Warm Outside- How did people stay warm outside before modern houses and heating systems? How do animals stay warm outside all winter? We will investigate and experience all the ways organisms thrive outside in the coldest months of the year. Activities include games and sports that get our blood pumping and temperatures rising, like cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding, to fire management and safety and winter shelter building.

Heat + Food = Cooking chemistry- What happens to food when we add heat? What are the different ways that we can cook food? Let’s share our favorite recipes with each other and the community.

Warm & Cozy Crafts- Snuggling up indoors, we will use materials like wool, flannel, melted wax, or felt, painting with warm colors, and explore projects that require friction.

Warm Hearts- anything, indoors or out, that makes our hearts happy. Music, laughter, dancing, reading, and eating together.

This fall, WonderKids is going Wild - exploring the wild outdoors, wild animals, and wild colors! Afterschool sites are open for registered students at Hardwick Elementary School, Wolcott Elementary School, and Craftsbury Academy for children in grades K-6. Our program day begins at school dismissal, and ends at 5:00 PM for pickup. Students should come prepared to be outside every day, rain or shine, and ready to play, create, and… get wild!

🍁 On Wild Outdoors days we will learn wilderness and team-building skills.

🦃 On Wild Animals days we will build and study wild animals in three dimensions with paper mache, clay, and more.

🎨 On Wild Colors days we’ll see how colors interact through tie dying, quilt paintings, and stamps.

Registration for the fall session is now closed.
